UK updates visa rules: new A-Level English test, higher living costs & PSW limit. Apply now for Jan 2026 to secure 2 years of PSW with AIA Study Abroad.

Major UK Visa Changes for International Students

The UK Government has announced a series of immigration reforms that will directly affect international students and skilled workers, Including those from Sri Lanka.

While these updates aim to enhance educational and employment standards, they also introduce stricter requirements for English proficiency, finances, and post-study work eligibility.

Here’s a clear summary of what’s changing and how to prepare.

1. Stronger English Language Requirement

As announced by the UK Home Office (gov.uk), all migrants, including students, will soon be required to meet A-Level equivalent English proficiency across all four skills —
speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

✅ Tests must be taken through a Home Office-approved provider.
✅ The new rule applies to both study and work visa categories.
✅ Applicants must prepare thoroughly to meet the higher standard. Tip: Begin preparing early for IELTS UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, or another approved exam if you plan to apply for 2026 or later

2. Post-Study Work (PSW) Duration Reduced

Effective 1 January 2027, the UK will shorten the post-study work period from 2 years to 18 months under the Graduate Route.

This means:

Those who enrol before the change — such as for the January 2026 intake — will remain eligible for the full 2-year Post-Study Work (PSW) period.

👉 Apply early for 1-Year Programmes (January 2026 Intake) to secure eligibility for the 2-Year PSW before the new rule is enforced.

3. Higher Financial & Living Cost Requirements

From 2025–2026, the UK Home Office will raise the financial proof required for student visa applications.

Applicants must now demonstrate sufficient funds to cover both tuition and living expenses:

  • £ 1,529 per month (London)
  • £ 1,171 per month (Outside London)

These living-cost figures are used to calculate the total funds needed for your stay (up to 9 months).

AIA Tip: Plan your financial documents early. AIA counsellors can help you ensure your bank statements, savings, and sponsorship letters meet the UK VI standards.

4. Employer & Work Visa Route Updates

Several employment-related changes are also being introduced:

  • Employers hiring foreign workers will face a 32 % increase in the Immigration Skills Charge.
  • The High Potential Individual (HPI) route will expand for graduates from the top 100 global universities, capped at 8,000 applications per year.
  • Adjustments are expected for both the Global Talent and Innovator visa pathways.

These changes may make sponsorships more competitive, reinforcing the importance of choosing career-oriented study programmes.
